XR Lab

@ SINTEF Digital, Oslo

XR stands for eXtended Reality, which is an umbrella term that encompasses various immersive technologies that blend the physical and digital worlds, such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). XR has numerous applications in various fields such as entertainment, education, healthcare, and training. It has the potential to transform the way we interact with technology, creating new opportunities for immersive experiences and enhancing our understanding of the world around us.

The XR Lab is a collaborative working space for XR topics and is operating, in many shapes and forms, since 2017 at the department for Sustainable Communication Technologies of SINTEF Digital (Oslo). It is managed by the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) group.

The XR Lab members are involved in several projects related to AR and VR, conducting research and performing tasks of software development and empirical evaluation (user experience and usability) regarding the application of AR and VR in various fields.

More specifically, in the XR Lab, we have worked or are currently working in the following technological areas:

  • Tabletop projection mapping
  • AR/VR digital twins
  • Privacy and data protection in the metaverse
  • VR locomotion
  • VR text input
  • VR servicescapes
  • Audio AR
  • AR data visualization
  • AR building information modeling (BIM)
  • Data sovereignty in virtual worlds

...and are involved in projects, such as: Gaia VesterĂ¥len (funded by RCN), RESIST (EU), VisD (internal SEP/RCN), TrustworthyMetaverse (internal SEP/RCN), Centre for Service Innovation (RCN), InvizAR (internal SEP/RCN) and more. For more information, please visit Our work.

The lab is currently hosted in the Green IoT's space, at the 4th floor of Forskningsveien 1. The lab equipment is constantly updated and currently contains:
